Budgam, Apr 17 (KNO): Authorities in central Kashmir’s Budgam district have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining, registering 23 FIRs and arresting 24 individuals during the first quarter of 2026, officials said.
According to data obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), a total of 45 vehicles involved in illegal extraction and transportation of minerals were seized across various parts of the district. These include 17 tippers, 20 tractors, five JCBs, two L&T machines, and one sand dredger.
The enforcement drive was carried out in multiple areas, including Beerwah, Khag, Hardpanzoo, Chadoora, Kanigund, Doodganga, and Waterhail.
Officials said that apart from police action, the Department of Geology and Mining has also imposed fines amounting to lakhs of rupees on violators.
Police have urged the public to cooperate and report instances of illegal mining, stating that community participation is vital in tackling the issue effectively.
Reaffirming its commitment, Budgam Police said it will continue to act against offenders to safeguard natural resources and maintain ecological balance in the district—(KNO)
